Black Man Files $300 Million Discrimination Lawsuit Against For-Profit Educational Institution For Racism and Fraud

You Came For My Black Child!

WASHINGTON, DC, June 23, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Terrance Alton Cox, III, a Black man, devoted father, entrepreneur, philanthropist, recipient of a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition by former Chairman, the late Congressman Charles Rangel (NY-13), national speaker for the stroke recovery community, author of several books on stroke including, God Is Not Through With Me Yet: My Testimonial: Redemption From A Deadly Stroke, and the creator of the Terrence Alton Cox 12-step Stroke Recovery program, designed to help people worldwide in their stroke recovery journey, the first to have American Standard Motorsports Award at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Founder of Terrance Cox Global Network, Host of The Real State Of Black America! Your Voice of the Nation, sponsor of Global Mixed Gender Basketball, Organizer of the Minority Youth Matters Movement, and a man with a passion for excellence has filed a $300 million lawsuit against Adtalem Global Education and Walden University alleging civil conspiracy, coercion, violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, racial discrimination, and permanent disability.

The lawsuit, filed in Georgia Superior Court (#17844825-0), details a disturbing pattern of Walden and its parent company, Adtalem Global Education, allegedly using their resources to support institutional racism and discriminatory practices. The complaint accuses Walden staff, with university backing, of filing fraudulent charges and false police reports against Cox, and of deliberately targeting his young daughter with actions that have caused ongoing suffering and trauma. Adtalem Global Education is one of the largest educational institutions in America, with Steve Beard serving as CEO. The group houses the following institutions: Walden University – Michael Betz, President, and Sue Subocz, Vice President; Chamberlain University - Karen Cox, President; American University - Jonathan Alger, President; Ross University - Alex Carrasco, President; and Ross University of Medicine - William Owen, President.

According to Cox, while he was recovering from a stroke, a period marked by significant medical vulnerability, staff at Walden University conspired with his ex-wife, Dr. Crystal Lewis, to remove him from his health insurance, thus depriving him of essential healthcare and rehabilitation services. Mr. Cox has filed a formal complaint under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) – record # 625976-VTC, against Walden University, alleging severe violations of federal disability laws. The complaint asserts that university personnel, along with Dr. Lewis, orchestrated a campaign of harassment and intimidation to cut his access to vital medication and physical therapy, and ultimately forced him out of his home, resulting in homelessness.

He claims the staff contributed to defamation of his character, pain, mental and physical suffering, while he was recovering from a stroke. The charges range from civil conspiracy, coercion, racial discrimination, and causing permanent disability to a person. Further, at Walden's direction, a series of fraudulent charges, false police reports were made, which not only exacerbated his precarious situation but also constituted an attempt to have him unjustly imprisoned while he was disabled and without resources; thus leading to his ongoing suffering. He believes the fraudulent charges against his young daughter were a diabolical action that could have unalived his precious daughter.

These actions, Cox contends, represent a pattern of discrimination and retaliation that is explicitly prohibited under the ADA, which mandates reasonable accommodations and protection from discriminatory treatment for individuals with disabilities. However, Dr. Lewis and her colleagues asserted "White Privilege," stating that she can do whatever she wants to do because she is white and Cox is Black, so no one will believe him.

The full filing is available at www.waldenyoucameatmyblackchild.com. According to Cox, "They placed my 19-year-old Black child in harm's way...They played with her life, and now they want to paint me as the problem because I dared to hold them accountable. They want to silence me, to cast me as the aggressor, while they hide behind billions in corporate dollars and a wall of public relations firms. This is a tactic as old as America itself—blame the victim, bury the truth."

Last year, in October 2024, a federal judge found Walden University guilty of predatory practices against students of color and ordered it to pay $28.5 million in a class action lawsuit resolving claims that the university misled students about the cost of its Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program because the Plaintiffs in the case alleged that Walden intentionally targeted, deceived, and exploited Black and female students, engaging in "reverse redlining". The settlement is seen as a potential precedent for prosecuting predatory advertising practices in for-profit education.

Shannon Schuyler, wife of Stephen Beard, Chairman and CEO of Adtalem Global Education, is Price Waterhouse Coopers' (PwC's) US Chief Purpose and Inclusion Officer - a role that brings together unique insights and perspectives from her prior roles as Chief Purpose Officer, Responsible Business Leader, and Chief Diversity Officer. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives have demonstrably benefited white women, like Mrs. Shannon Schuyler Beard, particularly in terms of workplace opportunities, education, and leadership positions. While DEI aims to address systemic inequalities faced by marginalized groups, research indicates that white women, like Mrs. Shannon Schuyler Beard, have often been the first to experience the positive impacts of these programs, sometimes at the expense of other groups.

While Mrs. Shannon Schuyler Beard benefits from DEI programs, her husband's companies, such as Walden University, are targeting women and the Black community. Mrs. Schuyler Beard is a DEI expert, married to the man using DEI as a ploy to attract and defraud Black students, while specifically targeting women of color, is diametrically opposed to everything she represents, has worked to achieve, and has been the beneficiary of for over 20+ years. If Mrs. Shannon Schuyler Beard can turn a blind eye to such a violation of federal law, what else is she not seeing? Is PwC helping Walden University with creative accounting, thus covering illegal activities?

In 2019, one year before Adtalem Global Education purchased DeVry University, they settled a lawsuit for $27.5 million. They were charged with making false or misleading statements graduate employment rate and the earnings relative to the graduates of other universities and colleges. The Department of Education decided to forgive $6 billion in debt to students who claimed they were misled by schools, including American University of the Caribbean and Ross University, owned by Adtalem Global Education. In October 2024, Walden settled another class action lawsuit and had to make a payment of $28.5 million for misleading students. This demonstrates a pattern of disregard for the law and a history of criminal activity.

Cox has also filed a formal complaint against Walden University with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) – OMB #1454-1960. The complaint alleges that the institution engaged in fraudulent activities targeting Black students and Black women, intentionally using direct marketing and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs with the intent of exploiting underprivileged communities. According to Cox, "Walden University systematically misled students through deceptive enrollment practices and discriminatory policies, resulting in significant financial and educational harm to those enrolled". Cox identifies how students, particularly from marginalized backgrounds, were promised outcomes and support services that were not delivered. Walden University is accused of "misrepresenting program requirements, graduation timelines, and career prospects", says Cox. He further alleges, "that the university's practices disproportionately adversely impacted minority students." These allegations, if substantiated, could prompt further federal scrutiny of the university's business and academic operations.

Adtalem has a well-documented history of deceptive recruiting, misrepresentation, advertising, and prioritizing aggressive marketing and questionable business tactics over student outcomes. "Adtalem and Walden's pattern of behavior is clear," said a representative for Mr. Cox. "Instead of empowering students, they have diverted funds to perpetuate discrimination, harm, and institutional racism, leaving students and families to pay the price. To cover their unscrupulous behavior, last year alone, they spent almost $1 million on lobbying and donated over $100,000 to political candidates."

The case calls for transparency and accountability from Adtalem's leadership and funders, including major shareholders and members of its compensation committee. The press and public are urged to demand transparency and Congressional scrutiny into how student tuition and federal funds are being spent, not on education, but on practices that harm the very communities these institutions claim to serve. Adtalem acquired Walden University on Sept. 11, 2020, for $1.48 B. They have raised an undisclosed amount in funding. It is as though they have received their funds through a series of deceptive practices and applied those funds to spreading hatred, discrimination, and furthering racist ideologies.

The company's pattern of misbehavior is deeply ingrained in Walden's culture and is well-documented. Adtalem and Walden's donors and investors should be made aware that they are funding the miseducation and deceptive practices of Adtalem. Paul S. Atkins, Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission along with members of Adtalem's Compensation Committee, Michael W. Malafronte, Chair, William W. Burke, Liam Krehbiel, and Sharon L. O'Keefe should be subpoena to testify at Congressional hearings at the U.S. House of Representatives Education and Workforce Committee before Chairman Walberg and Ranking Member Robert Scott to investigate this matter and examine the practices of Adtalem and Walden for spreading hatred and the subjugation of an entire race of people.

Mr. Cox has also filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) – report # 188816953, according to his representative. Cox alleges that Walden University has engaged in unfair, corrupt, and discriminatory practices that violate the FTC's standards for ethical business conduct by misleading students through deceptive marketing, misrepresentation of academic requirements, and discriminatory policies that disproportionately impact minority and vulnerable populations.

Cox argues that "these practices not only defrauded students financially but also undermined their educational and professional advancement." He states that, "Walden's actions constitute a pattern of behavior that is counter to the FTC's mandate to protect consumers from deceptive and unfair business practices." The complaint emphasizes the broader implications for consumer protection in higher education, highlighting the need for increased oversight of for-profit institutions.
