Dr. Allen is a distinguished historian and musician who has made substantial contributions to the fields of music publishing and historical research. Since 1990, he has served as owner, historian and musician at Digital Futures Music Publishing, where he oversees operations, writes songs and promotes his book "Content of Their Character: The Story Behind This Antique Quilt and the History of the African American Family That Made It."
Drawing inspiration from the example of his father, who earned a degree at the University of California Davis, Dr. Allen received a Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences from the University of California Santa Barbara in 1974 and a DDS from the University of California San Franciso in 1979. In his spare time, he completed coursework in jazz music theory and harmony in the jazz performance clinic and jazz workshop in 1982 at Stanford University. He holds memberships with the National Dental Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
A Dentist, Musician and Historian
Dr. Allen worked in dentistry for more than 30 years at various clinics supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and in such low-income communities as East Palo Alto and San Jose. Dr. Allen continued to pursue his musical ambitions while maintaining his dental career. Within the last decade, he has performed with numerous local jazz ensembles at community fairs, at college campuses and sponsored corporate events, where he honed his skills and works to give back to his community.
A Treasured Quilt and Piece of History
In addition to his present role at Digital Futures Music Publishing, Dr. Allen has served as the secretary and treasurer of the Samuel C. Allen Scholarship Foundation since 2000. The foundation honors his father's legacy and supports educational opportunities for students. Dr. Allen's dedication to preserving history is evident in his work to bring attention to an antique quilt linked to the Underground Railroad, for which he was assigned by his mother to be the curator.
Dr. Allen's book, "Content of Their Character: The Story Behind This Antique Quilt and the History of the African American Family That Made It," published in 2009, delves into the history he researched of his father's family roots, which trace back to the pre-Civil War era. The book also explores the history of the antique quilt, which has sparked speculation and controversy.
Hobbies and Future Aspirations
When not working in music or writing historical or fictional works, Dr. Allen enjoys going to the gym and woodworking. He attributes his success in life to a consistent ability to communicate with and interact with people, which he attributes to the influence of his parents.
Within the next five years, Dr. Allen aims to complete his research on the African American service members who served during World War II and intends to raise public awareness about the American legacy surrounding this inherited quilt and the Underground Railroad code that intertwines with it. Above all, he hopes to maintain strong relationships with friends and family and rejoin a band for regular performances.
