A Foundational Passion for Teaching
Since childhood, Ms. Morton dreamed of a career as a teacher. She turned her basement into a classroom with her two brothers and sister as her pupils. She continued to demonstrate this precocious interest in education and volunteered to assist her teachers with various tasks, such as grading papers.
Ms. Morton's career in education was further supported by her robust academic background. Even though she earned a Bachelor of Arts in social science in 1978 from California State University Stanislaus, she first began her career in the financial sector.
"I worked in the mortgage banking business for a while and it really wasn't where my heart was," Ms. Morton said.
Following her heart, in 1985 Ms. Morton began working on earning her teaching credentials, which ultimately allowed her to teach in a public elementary school setting. She taught in several public schools throughout the Ontario-Montclair School District from 1986 to 2000, during which time she pursued a Master of Arts from California State Polytechnic University Pomona, which she earned in 1992. "I don't know where I would be today if I was not able to go back and do that," she said.
Following her tenure at OMSD, Ms. Morton went on to teach within the Arcadia Unified School District until her retirement in 2021.
Accomplishments as an Educator
Ms. Morton continued working as an educator until 2021, completing a tenure of 35 years in education. During this time, her skills as a teacher earned her various accolades and awards.
For the 2003 to 2004 school year, Ms. Morton received the Profiles in Excellence Award from Longley Way Elementary School, where she taught from 2000 to 2021. In 2013, she was named the Teacher of the Month by the Rotary Club of Arcadia. Her inclusion in the twenty-fifth edition of Marquis Who's Who in the West for the years 1996 to 1997 further signifies the influence of her teaching.
Outreach Through Community Service
In addition to her work as an educator, Ms. Morton has been involved in various community service efforts. She serves on the board for the Las Atlas auxiliary of the Assistance League of Arcadia, a nonprofit organization that raises money to supply children in underserved areas with clothing and school supplies.
Ms. Morton continues her community service roles in her retirement years, serving as chairperson for Las Alas' Public Relations committee for two years, which is the minimum amount of time for service. Now, she is on the Las Alas board as a co-chairperson for the Philanthropic Committee. She is additionally involved in community service through her church, contributing through activities such as coordinating food drives.
The Enduring Legacy of Her Work
Over her many years as an educator, Ms. Morton has observed how the field has evolved, such as the shift in mathematics from simple addition to teaching number deconstruction in first grade. During her tenure, she enjoyed bringing a social, cooperative element to her lessons, which she believes is a positive movement in the modern classroom.
"I have always loved it as a teacher when the children work collaboratively," Ms. Morton said. "I think it's one of the good things they are doing now in education."
In the years to come, Ms. Morton strives to reignite her passion for painting and crafting.
