In 2023, Mr. Freburg furthered his education with a master's degree in computer science, also from Illinois State University. His graduate project focused on research in space technologies, with an emphasis on CubeSats and ground stations. In 2023, Mr. Freburg earned the ISU School of IT, Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award and the College of Applied Science and Technology, Outstanding Graduate Project Award. In 2024, the university granted him a postgraduate certificate in systems analysis.

In addition to his academic achievements, Mr. Freburg has earned numerous certifications that highlight his dedication to his field and professional development. He has obtained executive leadership certifications from the Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity and the National Society of Leadership and Success between 2021 and 2024. He was granted credentials from the CITI Program for educational, social and behavioral research with human subjects after completing the program in 2024.

Professional Career

Mr. Freburg joined Illinois State University in 2020 as a Java lab instructor, sharing his expertise in programming languages with students until 2023. From 2022 to 2023, he held a concurrent role as coordinator of the School of Information Technology Learning Center. In this position, he strengthened his skills in managing educational resources and supporting student learning.

Mr. Freburg's other professional experience includes his involvement with ISU registered student organizations (RSO). He founded the ISU Competitive Coding RSO and the Redbirds in Space RSO and now serves as faculty advisor. In the advisory role, Daniel prepares the Competitive Coding RSO to compete in global competitions. The students have ranked as high as the top 20% globally. Mr. Freburg advises the Redbirds in Space RSO in such activities as vertical landing rocket challenges and guiding their research of space information technologies and CubeSats. In addition, he serves on the ISU College of Applied Science and Technology Advisory Council and the Administrative Professional Council.

Continued Success in Technology

Further highlighting Mr. Freburg's position as a top technology professional are his various publications, including "Initial Steps to Create a University CubeSat Program," which he authored for the 2024 IEEE Space Computing Conference. The most recent article he has authored, "Space Information Technology Education: A CubeSat Approach," is being presented at the 2025 IEEE Space Computing Conference. His current involvement with the ISU installation of an S-band/UHF/VHF CubeSat ground station was presented at the CubeSat Developers Workshop 2025, California Polytechnic State University. His research on introductory coding interventions, "Increasing Student Success in Entry-Level Coding Courses," was published by the Midwest Association of Information Systems (MWAIS) in 2024. Publishing more research on the topic is in his near-future plans. His passion for his field is evident in his membership in several industry-related organizations, such as the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Association for Information Systems (AIS), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Mr. Freburg attributes his success to his decision to return to college and prioritize his studies, which led to valuable learning experiences that he now shares with others. Looking to the future, he plans to sustain his positive trajectory and improve the effectiveness of the IT Learning Center. He also intends to continue his research endeavors in space information technologies (Space IT) before ultimately transitioning into a post-retirement career in politics.
