New York City’s public school system, the largest in the United States, serves over 1 million students. Its diverse student body mirrors the city, with more than 41.1 percent identifying as Hispanic, 23.7 percent as Black, and 16.5 percent as Asian. Furthermore, 72.8 percent of students are classified as economically disadvantaged, highlighting the crucial need for initiatives like HITN’s back-to-school drive.
“HITN has been very instrumental in helping us every year with this school bookbag giveaway, and we’re very humbled and honored that we’ve been able to help over 300 kids a year. We are facing economic difficulties, and parents here at Lindsay Park and in the surrounding area sometimes can’t afford to have supplies for their kids. When we all come together, this is what happens,” said Assembly Member Maritza Davila, who was part of the first event hosted today in Brooklyn.
The back-to-school initiative reflects HITN’s unwavering commitment to education and its belief in the transformative power of learning. HITN aims to empower the next generation to succeed academically and beyond by equipping students with the necessary tools and resources.
“I feel very grateful because it has helped me a lot. I am not working and am a single mother of three small children. I hope God blesses each of the people who have offered a hand. I’m very grateful to God and you,” said Natalia, one of the attendees at today’s event in Brooklyn.
