National Math Stars Names Exceptional Texan Math Students to 2025 Cohort

Drawn from districts throughout the state, learners will each receive more than $100,000 in educational support over ten years

National Math Stars (NMS) has selected 57 exceptional students from Texas to take part in its core program. NMS supports high-performing math students beginning in elementary school. These new learners will join programs in Texas already underway.

Launched in 2023, NMS identifies mathematically extraordinary second and third-graders and provides long-term, individualized support to help them make the most of their talents. NMS’ core program provides each student with more than $100,000 in mentorship, enrichment opportunities, and other resources over 10 years or until high school graduation. The 2025 cohort is the first to include students from six newly added states - Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin - in addition to those from Texas.

“Texas has produced many remarkable mathematicians and scientists: pioneering number theorist and Abel Prize winner John Tate, Nobel laureate Steven Weinberg, and Sue Geller - professor emerita of mathematics at Texas A&M noted for her work in algebraic K-theory,” explained Ilana Walder-Biesanz, CEO of National Math Stars. “By welcoming new students from Texas into our program, we’re preparing them to one day join that distinguished tradition of math and science leaders from the Lone Star State.”

Applicants complete a multi-stage evaluation process that assesses each student’s mathematical aptitude, eagerness for deeper STEM exploration, and the program’s potential impact on their trajectory.

“These students represent the brilliance and potential thriving in classrooms across Texas,” said Monica Brewer, Texas Statewide Coordinator, Gifted/Talented Education. “Their selection by National Math Stars affirms what educators see every day: young minds capable of extraordinary mathematical thinking. We’re proud to support them as they begin this exciting journey.”

In January, National Math Stars announced a major geographic expansion into the Midwest, aimed at reaching more students in underrepresented regions. This year’s class reflects that broader reach and ongoing commitment to expanding access to advanced education.
