athenahealth Unveils Next Generation AI-Native EHR Solution, athenaClinicals, to Simplify Clinician Experience for Ambulatory Practices

New capabilities, including industry-first clinically inferred diagnoses, are part of the company’s reimagined athenaOne platform rolling out this fall

athenahealth, a leading provider of network-enabled software and services for healthcare practices and systems nationwide, today announced advancements in its electronic health record (EHR), athenaClinicals, designed to simplify the clinical workflow from end to end, automating routine tasks and delivering personalized insights to enable a more patient-centered approach to care. This update is part of the company's ongoing launch of new features within its AI-native athenaOne platform leading up to its flagship customer event, Thrive, in November 2025.

“Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence are allowing us to revisit the role technology plays in healthcare, and we are bringing customers along as we develop, test, and deploy solutions that will future proof their practices,” said Bob Segert, chairman and chief executive officer at athenahealth. “That includes reimagining clinical workflows to reduce administrative tasks and let clinicians focus fully on their patients.”

This next generation AI-native athenaClinicals delivers a more intelligent and adaptive clinical experience. Brand new capabilities join existing AI-powered features, including athenahealth’s Ambient Notes, to facilitate chart reviews, automate clinical documentation, support clinical decision-making, and streamline care coordination. athenahealth’s AI-native experience is designed with flexibility at its core. While advanced AI tools are available to everyone, their use is optional, allowing each physician to experiment with and integrate AI into their workflow at their own pace.

“EHRs, while essential healthcare tools, can interrupt the human interaction at the center of care. This new era of innovation is giving us the tools to reimagine workflows the way they should be,” said Paul Brient, chief product and operations officer at athenahealth. “For our customers, this enables us to transform the EHR into a delightful, super helpful clinical companion that keeps in mind their readiness, preferences, and autonomy.”

Underpinning this clinical experience is the new athenaOne adaptive intelligence layer, which combines purpose-built engines, large language models, and machine learning with a rich ambulatory care-focused dataset to power relevant and timely insights in the workflow. The dataset draws from millions of data points from disparate sources across practices, hospitals, public health registries, payers, data aggregators, and other EHR systems.

The next generation athenaClinicals will feature the following capabilities, some of which are already in Alpha testing and will be generally available in the coming months:

  • Clinically Inferred Diagnoses – in Alpha testing this fall, athenaOne’s brand new industry-first clinical intelligence capability uses AI to predict and surface potential diagnoses directly in the workflow. Clinicians will receive these AI-driven suggestions in the workflow, along with links to supporting evidence across a wide array of data including lab results, imaging studies, vitals, and clinical notes to ensure accurate, informed provider decision making.
  • Chart Assist – currently in Alpha testing, athenaOne’s Chart Assist leverages generative AI to provide clinicians with an AI-enabled assistant embedded in the workflow that pulls from athenaOne’s intelligence layer to answer certain questions and summarize information to support a patient visit.

"This is a huge win for both patient care and provider sanity. Having athenaOne Clinicals summarize key changes across encounters means I spend less time digging through notes and more time with the patient. It’s like having a clinical “CliffsNotes” generator that still lets me ask deeper questions when something doesn’t add up. In a busy psychiatry practice where patients often have complex, layered histories, this capability ensures I don’t miss critical updates while keeping the encounter focused." - Michelle Gilreath, Owner/PMHNP-BC, Mindwell

  • Next Generation ChartSync: Health Information Exchange (HIE) Document Ingestion and Summarization – currently in Beta testing, athenaOne's existing intelligent interoperability solution, ChartSync, automatically processes 94% of incoming medication related information from external sources, including other ambulatory practices, pharmacies, and hospitals. With this new capability, ChartSync will leverage AI to read HIE-sourced documents such as hospital discharge summaries and provide a robust overview of patient health changes since the last visit for provider review.

"This is extremely valuable to have the most up to date information on a patient when they come to our office for an appointment. It allows us to have the records from various external sites, avoid duplicative orders, and reconcile meds appropriately, since patients rarely bring their meds in, and address any new problems/diagnosis. Reading HIE-sourced documents will be another tool in the toolbox that will allow us a holistic view of the patient and further our ability to provide the best care." - Tracy Witz, Practice Manager, Waisbren Medicine

  • Ambient-Sourced Suggested Diagnosisin Alpha testing this fall for customers using Ambient Notes, the new capability will enable Ambient Notes users to capture what was discussed during a clinical visit generated from ambient listening tools and will surface the relevant diagnosis to a patient’s chart, versus leaving it within a single visit note.

These new capabilities, powered by the underlying adaptive intelligence layer, will be directly integrated into athenaOne and available to all athenahealth customers at no additional charge. This approach means customers can benefit from advanced technology without the need to purchase an array of third-party add-ons.
