WINNIPEG, MB: Construction is almost complete on the first woman-built crematorium in Canada. The project, which is spearheaded by Ashley Newton, the founder and owner of Alterna Cremation, commenced late in the spring of 2025 and is expected to be finished by early 2026. The St. Andrews facility will bring all of Alterna’s cremation services in-house, expanding compassionate care for families in Winnipeg and the surrounding areas, including Transcona, St. Norbert, and Selkirk.
Ashley Newton, the founder and owner of Alterna Cremation in Winnipeg, has achieved many milestones in her career, and another is on the horizon: The completion of Alterna’s new crematorium - the first cremation facility in Canada to be built by a woman. The crematorium, which is located in St. Andrews, Manitoba, will bring all of Alterna’s services in-house and allow for the expansion of compassionate care to more Manitoba families.
When Ashley Newton founded Alterna Cremation in 2019, it was with the vision of providing Manitobans with a simple alternative to more traditional funeral services. Since then, she and her all-women team have become trusted and well-known figures in Manitoba’s male-dominated funeral services industry. Alterna Cremation has provided dignified cremation services and compassionate care to countless grieving families and remains committed to transparent, affordable cremation services for all Manitobans. For years, Ashley and her team have been performing cremation services in nearby Selkirk, Manitoba, but that is about to change.
A long-time dream of Ashley’s has been to build a crematorium that brings all of Alterna’s services in-house, and after years of planning, the ground was finally broken for a new crematorium at Alterna’s St. Andrews location in late spring of 2025. Work was ongoing throughout the summer and fall, and the project is expected to be completed early in 2026. It will be the first crematorium built by a woman in Canada.
