Following the massive success of its debut, How To Make It In Mumbai is back with a highly anticipated second season. The series has been releasing weekly episodes since October 2024 and has already tripled the viewership of its premiere run, garnering over 3 million views across 14 episodes. Co-created by Jay Kila and Tarun Hansen, How To Make It In Mumbai once again pushes boundaries with its razor-sharp storytelling, addressing timely social issues while maintaining its signature humor and cultural vibrancy about the Indian music industry.
Season 2 Overview:How To Make It In Mumbai is a satirical comedy that tells the story of rapper Jay Kila from NYC, who discovers his calling and decides to move to Mumbai to pursue his dreams of making it in music. While the first season explored the inner workings of the music industry with record labels and how they mistreat artists, the second season looks at the nature of relationships between artists and how commercial success can often beget rivalries. This season takes a deeper dive with its commentary, as it also examines societal issues like sexism and racism in the entertainment industry.
The plot of Season 2 focuses on another up-and-coming Mumbai rapper - Osho Bling - who invites Jay Kila to go on tour with him after seeing Kila’s skin cream ad go viral. Chaos and adventure ensue as comradery quickly turns into competition. In addition to its humor, this season delves deeper into the complexities of the Indian entertainment industry, shining a spotlight on the mistreatment of women, especially in hip-hop.
“We wanted to tell stories that matter, as well as add some deeper messaging with this season. The challenges faced by women in the entertainment industry felt both urgent and relevant,” said co-creator Jay Kila. “At the same time, we’ve stayed true to the humor and satirical tone that makes the series resonate with audiences across the globe.”
Exciting Collaborations and Cameos:Season 2 also boasts an exciting lineup of cameos, including Angry Prash - one of India’s top animated YouTubers, actor and singer Arshiya Arshi, who appeared on Splitsvilla, as well as many rappers from the Indian hip-hop scene: Irfana, Yeda Anna, Pratika Ness, Poetik Justis, producer Aakash, B-Boy Flying Machine, and more. These cameos add another layer of realism and star power to the show’s already dynamic narrative.
Creative Control and Independent Spirit:As with the first season, season 2 was entirely self-funded and self-produced by Kila and Hansen, who opted to retain full creative control rather than partner with OTT platforms. “We believe in telling stories on our terms, and our decision to stay independent has allowed us to take creative risks that truly resonate with our audience,” said co-creator Tarun Hansen.
A Groundbreaking Format:Known for its innovative 3-4 minute episode format, How To Make It In Mumbai continues to redefine storytelling for the digital age. The bite-sized episodes are tailored to engage today’s on-the-go audiences, while delivering depth, humor, and a compelling narrative in each installment.
Critical Acclaim and Growing Global Audience:The series’ unique blend of comedy, cultural commentary, and relatable characters has garnered a dedicated following both in India and among the Indian diaspora worldwide. By addressing timely social issues like cultural identity and systemic challenges in the entertainment industry, How To Make It In Mumbai continues to set itself apart as a groundbreaking digital series.
