Feeling profoundly stuck and unable to see new possibilities is a common struggle many people face at some point in their lives. They find themselves navigating what seems like an endless maze of impossible choices -- balancing the ambition to succeed with the desire to nurture personal passions -- or feeling torn between playing it safe and reaching for bigger dreams. This sense that life only offers “either-or” options can be deeply frustrating leaving many wondering why life feels so limited, like an endless series of compromises.
Through workshops and speaking engagements around the world, Bree Rosenblum helps people reframe their limitations and embrace new possibilities. She discovered firsthand the power of breaking free from “either-or” thinking and now shares this life-changing perspective with others. In her book, AND: The Tiny Word That Can Radically Transform Your Life, Rosenblum introduces her transformative “OR to AND” approach that encourages people to move beyond limiting beliefs and unlock unexpected pathways to growth, creativity, and fulfillment. She shares, "There is another way — a way to step out of a narrow mindset and experience a fuller life without having to sacrifice any part of yourself. The same limitations that once felt confining can become openings, inviting growth, creativity, and genuine connection."
At the heart of Rosenblum’s approach are four questions designed to help people recognize their limiting mindset, connect with their true feelings, and take immediate action. These questions provide a transformative roadmap to break free from old habits and explore life in new, unexpected ways.
Question #1 - Ask "What’s Going On?"
This question guides people to what feels challenging, conflicted, or constraining in their lives. According to Rosenblum, "The first question always starts right where you are—with the circumstances of your life. Typically, you won’t need to go looking for conflict. It will find you," she adds, "It’s important to remember that challenge is a natural and important part of our lives. Just because you encounter a challenge doesn’t mean you did something wrong. It also doesn’t mean the world did something wrong to you."
Question #2 - Ask "What’s My Underlying Fear?"
Next, Rosenblum encourages people to dig deeper and identify the fears or limiting beliefs underlying their situation. These hidden fears can often be invisible but profoundly influence decisions. “Thoughts that create OR-living are powered by fear. They tell you that you are limited, broken, or unworthy. We have to see these thoughts clearly before we can break their spell. When we’re honest about our fears, we reveal the OR-thinking that has kept us from pursuing our dreams,” she says.
Question #3 - Ask "What’s Actually True?"
The third question cuts right to the heart of the matter. People can believe all kinds of lies and feed all sorts of distortions. In the end, they need to discover what is actually true. “Shifting from OR-thinking to AND-thinking is simple but not easy. This question is impossible to answer from the head; we have to move down to the heart. If you try to engage with the third question from OR-thinking, you will fail. However, the moment you stop listening to OR a private and receptive space emerges. The answers that emerge transform AND-thinking into AND-living and lead to asking the fourth question."
Question #4 - Ask "What Now?"
This final question helps people make the shift from possibility to action. "The answer to the fourth question is often unexpected and helps you see the bigger picture. We don’t actually need to resolve all of our internal tensions and limitations before living an AND-life," Rosenblum advises. "Sometimes, it’s enough to imagine the choice we might make, or the life we might lead, if we believed in the possibility. Once you see it, you are free to make any choice and move forward in a new way."
Rosenblum takes a deeper dive into the four-question framework in her book, AND: The Tiny Word That Can Radically Transform Your Life, offering practical guidance on how to apply it to both everyday challenges and life’s bigger decisions. To complement the book, she developed a companion guided journal designed to help readers engage even more actively with the material. Together, the book and journal provide hands-on exercises and actionable strategies to replace “OR” with “AND,” unlocking creativity, enhancing leadership, and fostering deeper relationships.
Bree Rosenblum’s approach draws on a rich blend of experiences as a professor, meditation teacher, and organizational leader and combines her scientific expertise as a Professor and Distinguished Chair at UC Berkeley with a deep commitment to empowering others, leading workshops, offering coaching sessions, and inspiring audiences worldwide. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, BBC, and on the TEDx stage. She splits her time between New Mexico, Colorado, California, and anywhere her journey of “AND” takes her.
