London-based TV presenter, writer, investigative journalist, and radio host David Bass first found fame as a viral YouTube comedy filmmaker in the days when the platform was just blossoming. His comedy songs, such as “Heavy Metal Farmer” and “Dubstep Santa” reached 30+ million viewers.
20th Century Fox discovered him there on YouTube and invited him to interview stars on the red carpet when ‘Avatar’ launched in London. Bass met stars such as James Cameron, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and many others who were involved in the film’s success. From there, 20th Century Fox invited Bass to meet and interview James Cameron in a luxury mansion in the heart of Beverly Hills.
“This was totally overwhelming for me as a young guy who grew up in a normal life near London. I was whisked off in a blacked out Bentley, taken to 5 star hotels and shown Matt Groenings house in the private Fox plot,” said Bass. He was waiting for Cameron and found himself sitting beside a big TV producer from the United Kingdom who turned out to be at the helm of ITV2, and this meeting led to Bass being invited to be a presenter for the station, a mainstream channel in the United Kingdom.
Just last week, Bass was featured on KPRZ Radio in California in an interview that covered his time as a TV presenter for ‘ITV at the Movies’. Bass reflected back to his first moments in Hollywood. His meeting with Cameron was a turning point that marked a new life that was completely contrary to what Bass considered to be normal. Suddenly, life became glamorous with fame and luxury at every turn. “I was going to extravagant parties. I would be transported to this alternate reality every couple of weeks, then I’d go back to basic life at home,” said Bass.
According to Bass, the juxtaposition between the two worlds was profound. He found that many of his friends and family members back home had no idea what the celebrity world entailed or what went on there. “It was hard to explain or relate it to people,” said Bass.
He says this celebrity world was plush yet fake with superficiality surrounding him. Bass was shocked when his PR agent told him that he could find a fake C-list girlfriend to help boost his profile. People he thought were at the top of their game were at rock bottom, consumed by desperation, depression, and a deep emptiness.
Bass turned from this life to a life that is about much more than the superficial fast-paced, glamorous life of those in Hollywood. His life is now filled with faith, redemption, and God. Today, Bass is the host of the RISE Radio Podcast, which explores questions of faith and spirituality using many of his experiences in Hollywood to spread hope and discernment about false philosophies.
“It wasn't until my life in the media came crashing down after a mental health crisis that I hit rock bottom. And it was here that I found that Jesus was the Rock at the bottom. He had been there all along. He offered me true hope and salvation that transcends beyond this broken world,” said Bass.
