The Secret Cave and the Light of the World by Sheila Hara follows Hiro, Lani, Wazi, and their parents as they set out to explore a cave marked on an old map. Led by Papa, they carefully follow the path underground, encountering natural obstacles like hidden holes, narrowing tunnels, and a rushing river. When their flashlights fail, they discover a mysterious lantern emitting a golden light that reveals symbols and inscriptions connected to their faith. Using this lantern, the family solves puzzles, unlocks hidden passages, and navigates the cave’s dangers. Their goal is to reach the cave’s deepest chamber, guided by messages encouraging trust in the “Light.” Throughout the expedition, they rely on the lantern’s light and Papa’s guidance to stay together and move safely through the darkness, uncovering an ancient place tied to their Christian beliefs.
Sheila Hara’s The Secret Cave and the Light of the World is a wonderfully clear and immediately immersive story that gently draws us into the adventure of our young protagonists. Hara’s descriptive language paints near cinematic scenes, from the lantern revealing a hidden stone path beneath rushing water, to the discovery of an underground sanctuary bathed in golden light, and with inscriptions and symbols. The dialogue is natural and Hara uses restraint in how she structures the delivery of the message in the story, with each character thoughtfully observing their surroundings and sharing how it connects, such as the meaning behind the verse John 8:12. The narrative progresses at a steady pace, with moments of calm and purposeful movement, but with the addition of hurdles that are important to the arc. Overall, this Christian-themed story is appropriate for all ages and equally as entertaining. Very highly recommended."
