Pastor Ryan Macdonald Urges Communities to “Show Up Where It Counts” in New Feature Interview

Batavia faith and community leader calls for everyday action to strengthen neighborhoods, citing two decades of grassroots experience

Ryan Macdonald, Lead Pastor of The City Church and St. Anthony’s, is using the spotlight from his recent in-depth interview to advocate for a return to consistent, hands-on community leadership—something he says is just as achievable for individuals as it is for organizations.

“We don’t need more people talking about leadership,” Macdonald says. “We need more people living it—showing up where it counts, even when no one is watching.”

His call comes at a time when communities face mounting challenges. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 1 in 5 Americans report feeling less connected to their neighbors than they did five years ago, while civic engagement in local initiatives has dropped by over 20% in some regions.

Macdonald believes the answer lies in small, repeatable acts of presence—what he calls “everyday leadership.” Drawing from his own start as a teenager setting up chairs for backyard worship, he shares, “That’s where I learned leadership isn’t a title. It’s what you do consistently.”

The pastor-businessman emphasizes that community impact doesn’t require a big budget or a platform. “Maybe it’s helping an elderly neighbor with groceries, mentoring one young person, or supporting a local fundraiser. It’s about being in the town, in the homes, in the shop—not just talking about change, but being part of it.”

Call to Action

Macdonald encourages individuals to take a “15-Minute Pledge” each week to do something—however small—that builds connection in their own neighborhood. “Fifteen minutes a week might not seem like much, but multiplied across a city, it’s transformative,” he says.
