Virtual supervision of contrast-enhanced diagnostic exams was temporarily approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) during the pandemic. In April 2020, the CMS amended the definition of direct supervision to allow virtual presence through real-time audiovisual telecommunications technology, provided it was permitted by the state. The widespread adoption of the model has since highlighted the benefits of virtual supervision, particularly in addressing the ongoing radiologist shortage.
As of January 1, 2026, the virtual supervision model has been made permanent, allowing imaging centers to perform level 2 diagnostic imaging procedures without requiring a supervising physician to be physically present. ContrastConnect's platform connects medical facilities with qualified physicians experienced in contrast media administration who can direct on-site medical staff in the event of an adverse reaction.
Using the platform, clients can directly communicate with technologists and patients through a secure, encrypted portal that is compliant with HIPAA and HITECH regulations. Users will also be able to manage onboarding, scheduling, invoices, patient details, and more from a single dashboard, simplifying administrative work. Furthermore, the necessary equipment will be supplied to the facility by ContrastConnect, including a rolling tower and mounted iPad pre-configured with the company's virtual supervision platform; for larger facilities with multiple scanners, additional iPads and towers will be provided to ensure coverage.
In addition, ContrastConnect will provide training to on-site technologists, including mock code training and supplemental virtual training. The company will also manage annual training renewal and quarterly technologist and facility readiness reports, ensuring the facility remains compliant with state safety standards at all times.
