Former D1 Basketball Player Wendell Tull is on a Mission to Change the Face of Modern Racing to Include Underrepresented Communities - Both On and Off the Track
(PRUnderground) December 27th, 2022
When one thinks of motorsports, what comes to mind? Luxurious Formula 1 races? NASCAR’s Daytona 500? Jeff Gordon? Michael Schumacher? Ayrton Senna, perhaps? Odds are, that the faces one recalls are of primarily one race and one gender, but why? Former D1 Basketball Player Wendell Tull asked himself this same question. Why are there so few people of color behind the wheel or even behind the scenes of these historic races?
Determined to champion change, Wendell Tull Co-Founded Diversity Drive to change the face of Motorsports racing to reflect authentic diversity, equity, and inclusion. Diversity Drive was founded on the belief that sports in general should not be dominated by one demographic, but rather reflect the entirety of its fans, cities, and enthusiasts.
Lewis Hamilton is arguably the best Formula 1 driver of all time, and breaking barriers within the industry. Hamilton, who comes from the African diaspora, is an anomaly within the motorsports industry — and not only from a driver’s perspective. The lack of diversity in motorsports specifically is not only apparent on the track but also off the track — starting from the top down.
From engineering to logistics, sustainability, marketing, PR, operations, executive roles, pit crews, and everything in between; Wendell and the Diversity Drive team are dedicated to breathing new life and new opportunities into the industry with purpose, precision, and passion.
To do this, Diversity Drive is proud to announce its plans to build a diverse pipeline of future drivers through its Diversity Drive Academies located in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. These eight Diversity Drive academies spanning six continents will recruit young and enthusiastic drivers who are 6-18 years of age, to try out for a potential career in motorsport racing.
Wendell Tull has successfully run diversity programs at NASA, Cal Berkeley, and NVIDIA technology. Now, as he gears up to take the wheel, he hopes to translate that success to diversifying motorsport racing, behind the wheel and behind the scenes. Wendell is thrilled to announce that he will be taking on a new role not only as Co-Founder of Diversity Drive but as a new driver within the industry.
“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “you can kill the dreamer but you can’t kill the dream.” I dream that women and people from underrepresented populations can envision a future in motorsport racing.” – Wendell Tull, Co-Founder of Diversity Drive
Through proof of concept, dedication to community, and unwavering commitment to changing the face of motorsports, Wendell Tull’s purpose-driven vision has come to fruition with Diversity Drive.
