Occupational and physical therapists at Intermountain Health Holy Rosary help patients learn essential life skills and motor development.

Diagnosed with the rare Schaaf-Yang syndrome as an infant, Max Goff began pediatric therapy services at Intermountain Health Holy Rosary Hospital to help him reach important milestones.
Max began in January 2015, when he was just 4 months old. Now 11, Max continues to receive therapy both at the hospital and at school, thanks to a partnership between Holy Rosary Hospital and Miles City Schools.
“He is becoming the best version of Max,” said his mother, Jaimie Goff. “Schaaf-Yang limits him from doing certain things. Through therapy he is slowly reaching milestones, like sitting, grabbing, balance and core strength. They are also working with him on everyday tasks like washing and bathing, brushing his teeth, and getting dressed.”
Max’s care team includes occupational and physical therapists who work with him on essential life skills and motor development. While he currently uses a wheelchair, Max’s team is working with him to be able to stand and potentially even walk one day.
“His (team) is doing a lot to try to stand. That’s not really in his wheelhouse right now, but a lot of stretching, muscle tone, and getting his torso strong,” said Jaimie. “(Walking) is a big goal. But it’s doable because kids with his condition do walk and it is something that I would like to see for him one day.”
“It has been a joy to see him take interest in routine daily tasks and finding new, fun ways to engage him in learning things like brushing his teeth,” said Heather Bowman, occupational therapist at Holy Rosary. “He even seems to enjoy our singing while we work together.”
Having therapy services available locally has made a world of difference for the Goff family. “We would have to travel, and with both of us working full time that would be hard. It’s so convenient being able to get all of his therapies right here in Miles City,” Jaimie said. “It’s so wonderful being able to have the services at the school as well because he gets that extra support that he needs while educating the school staff, so they can continue to work with Max throughout the week. It’s a win-win!”
“We have been blessed to be able to work with Max in the outpatient and school setting, which helps our team collaborate on goals,” said Amy Tooke, physical therapy assistant at Holy Rosary. “It has been meaningful to have connections with the staff at the school. They are able to help us reach these goals with their daily attention to Max and helping him achieve his potential.”
Max’s care team at Holy Rosary Hospital has become like family. “Everyone knows Max and makes us feel so welcome. They genuinely are looking out for his best interests. They are constantly coming up with new and different ways to help him reach his goals. They make sure he has everything he needs to succeed and function at home in his day-to-day life,” Jaimie shared.
