Dog Treats Recalled Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

By: WebWire

A pet food manufacturer that produces biltong, a form of dried, cured meat that originated in Southern African countries, is recalling several varieties of dog treats for possible Salmonella contamination. At the time of this release, no reports of any illnesses have been reported. While the contamination is within dog treats, humans can become sick from just handling the food.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that is common in many types of food. The bacteria can be transmitted by ingesting foods contaminated with small amounts of animal feces. Pets infected with Salmonella may be lethargic and have diarrhea, decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected pets can spread the bacteria to other pets and humans.  Anyone who thinks they purchased a product with possible contamination should return or destroy these products. More information can be found on the FDA website.

“Each year, product recalls due to Salmonella and other foodborne pathogens affect manufactures,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL is ready to assist manufacturers with testing services to help prevent costly recalls.
