Greece Expected To Pass Austerity Measures, Markets Soar

Optimism that the Greek government will approve austerity measures required to received additional financial assistance lifted the markets to a sharply higher close with the Dow surging 109 points to 12,190. Nasdaq leaped 57 points to 2687.

On the upside

Goldman Sachs upgraded Patriot Coal (NYSE: PCX ) to Conviction Buy yesterday.

Rising silver prices lifted shares of First Majestic Silver (NYSE: AG), Endeavour Silver (NYSE: EXK) and Silvercorp Metals (NYSE: SVM).

Wave Systems (Nasdaq: WAVX) filed a $30 million shelf registration to replace an expiring shelf registration.

On the downside

Investors locked in profits on Acura Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: ACUR), whose shares surged yesterday on news that the Food and Drug Administration approved the company's pain medication Oxecta.

Gevo (Nasdaq: GEVO) updated the airline industry yesterday at the Paris Air Show on its progress in developing biojet fuel.

Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) widened fourth quarter losses more than expected.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 5 to 1 on the NYSE and by nearly 4 to 1 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks soared 17 points at 806.
