Markets Flat At Midday

The markets traded near the flatline during the midday with the Dow slipping 2 points to 12,580. Nasdaq rose 8 points to 2824.

On the upside

Oppenheimer analyst Boris Peaker initiated coverage of Zalicus (Nasdaq: ZLCS) with an Outperform rating.

Rising gold prices lifted shares of Yamana Gold (NYSE: AUY) and Kinross Gold (NYSE: KGC).

Silvercorp Metals (NYSE: SVM) issued a resource report for its BYP gold-lead-zinc project in Hunan Province, China indicating 225,400 ounces of gold and inferring an additional 208,000 ounces of gold, 111,272 ounces of lead and 283,964 tonnes of zinc.

On the downside

Advanced Energy (Nasdaq: AEIS) lowered its second quarter earnings and revenue guidance.

Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Bank cited weaker than expected sales of LCD television sets for downgrading AU Optronics (NYSE: AUO).

The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating St. Joe (Nasdaq: NTCT) and chairman Bruce Berkowitz for impairment of investment policies as well as anti-fraud and audit practices.

In the broad market, advancing issues barely edged out decliners by a slim margin on the NYSE while decliners outpaced advancers by nearly 9 to 10 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks added a point to 841.
