FIRST 5 SAN DIEGO’S ‘HEALTHY COOKING EVENT’ CELEBRATES NATIONAL FRUITS AND VEGETABLES MONTHS

Event featured giveaways, healthy cooking demonstrations at Vons store in La Mesa

First 5 San Diego celebrated healthy eating habits Wednesday at the Vons store in La Mesa with parents and caregivers of children ages 0 through 5 at the ‘Healthy Cooking Event’. Families enjoyed healthy eating demonstrations with Vons produce, giveaways and other fun activities. Parents walked away with tips and tricks to create healthy recipes for their children.

“Parents are hungry for resources to help raise a healthy child,” said Kim Gallo, Executive Director of First 5 San Diego. “First 5 San Diego is happy to reach out to the community and provide these valuable resources in many different ways. By partnering with Vons, we gain a partner in spreading the message of eating healthy and bettering the lives of San Diego’s youngest residents.”

Together, First 5 San Diego and Vons have distributed more than 100,000 healthy eating information fliers throughout the community to educate and inspire county residents to take action and responsibility for their health.

“Safeway has a long history of making a difference in our neighborhoods and creating strong partnerships with likeminded organizations,” said Carlos Illingworth, Director of Communications and Government Affairs for Vons, a Safeway Company. “We understand that being a part of a community means working together to help those in need and creating opportunities to support our neighbors. We have worked with numerous agencies throughout San Diego County and are proud to count First 5 San Diego among them.”

First 5 San Diego serves one out of every four children aged 0 through 5 in San Diego. The organization has found success in supporting San Diego families last year by sponsoring or participating in community events that reached nearly 141,000 families.

At the ‘Healthy Cooking Event’, San Diego parents learned tips to promote healthy childhood eating. During National Fruits and Vegetables Months, the message is especially relevant. Tips for promoting healthy eating habits in children include:

Having regular family meals.

Knowing dinner is served at approximately the same time every night and that the entire family will be sitting down together is comforting and enhances appetite. Breakfast is another great time for a family meal, especially since children who eat breakfast tend to do better in school.

Cooking more meals at home.

Eating home cooked meals is healthier for the whole family and sets a great example for children about the importance of food. Restaurant meals tend to have more fat, sugar, and salt. Save dining out for special occasions.

Getting children involved.

Children enjoy helping adults to shop for groceries, selecting what goes in their lunch box, and preparing dinner. It’s also a chance for you to teach them about the nutritional values of different foods, and (for older children) how to read food labels.

Making a variety of healthy snacks available instead of empty calorie snacks.

Keep plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grain snacks, and healthy beverages around and easily accessible so children become used to reaching for healthy snacks instead of empty calorie snacks like soda, chips, or cookies.

Limiting portion sizes.

Don’t insist your child cleans the plate, and never use food as a reward or bribe.
