Dow Jones Sustainability World Index Recognizes Caterpillar's Leadership for the Seventh Consecutive Year

PEORIA, Ill., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT) has been selected as a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the seventh consecutive year. The annual review of the DJSI is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change, supply chain standards and labor practices.

"We believe the sustainability of our world and the sustainability of our business are inseparable," said Caterpillar Vice President, Sid Banwart, who has responsibility for the company's Human Services Division. "We recognize the challenges of sustainable development are numerous and daunting, but so are the opportunities. Our membership on the DJSI solidifies our global commitment to the company, our customers and the communities where we live and work."

The subjective criteria for inclusion on the DJSI has become more stringent as the importance of sustainability issues continue to grow for investors. This year, Caterpillar saw a five point gain in its total score and received the highest overall score reached by a company in the industrial engineering industry.

"Throughout Caterpillar, our employees look for opportunities to apply our expertise and technology in areas affecting sustainable development. This recognition is a reaffirmation of the hard work we demonstrate every day," said Jody L. Howard, Caterpillar's Director of Social Responsibility who leads the company's sustainable development initiatives and environmental, health and safety performance. "Not only have we maintained our status as sector leader in the social and environmental dimensions, but we have also increased our standing in the economic arena as well."

Each of the Dow's 2,500 companies was invited to take part in the comprehensive assessment, and only 318 companies met the standards for listing on the DJSI World.

Launched in 1999, the DJSI World is the first global index to track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Research for the DJSI World is conducted by the SAM Group, an independent asset management company specializing in sustainability investments.

"Caterpillar continues to be a leader in risk management and superior in product stewardship," said Carl-Johan Francke, equity analyst with the SAM Group. "Other areas of strength include the social dimension with strong, consistent scores related to hiring, retaining and developing its employees."

Caterpillar, together with its dealers, works to provide sustainable solutions in industries and applications that span the globe.
