Opioid Use & Abuse: Results Physiotherapy Joins the Discussion with a Viable Alternative

By: PRLog
FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Nov. 8, 2016 - PRLog -- In a recent letter to physicians, Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, M.D., M.B.A., urged his fellow healthcare professionals to help stem the tide of opioid addiction in the U.S. And it does feel like a tidal wave. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) indicates opioid deaths have quadrupled since 1999, and it is estimated 78 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. A further 2 million people are currently abusing or addicted to opioids.

In March of this year, the CDC released guidelines urging healthcare professionals to reduce the amount of opioids prescribed to the lowest possible effective dose, and to avoid prescribing opioids as a first-line treatment for chronic pain (TurnTheTideRx pocket guide).

Reduction makes sense – the U.S. is the world-leader in opioid use by a factor of 400 – but the question remains: what about the people suffering with pain?

The CDC provides other forms of pain management in its guidance, including physical therapy as a viable alternative for many people who struggle with daily pain. In response, the physical therapy community, led by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), has banded together and launched its own campaign: #ChoosePT (MoveForwardPT.com).

"Results Physiotherapy is taking a leadership position in this initiative because we've seen what our unique approach to physical therapy can do for our patients," says Results Physiotherapy President and CEO Tony Ueber. "From debilitating headaches, TMJ, back and knee pain, pain in the pelvic region – Results consistently treats over 100 musculoskeletal conditions that yield life-changing improvement for our patients."

"The response to the APTA's #ChoosePT initiative has been incredible," says Joseph Brence (PT, DPT, COMT, DAC), National Spokesperson & Editorial Board Member of the APTA. "The impact and reach are greatly expanded when large and respected organizations like Results Physiotherapy take an active role, and we continue to encourage physical therapy companies of all sizes to join us in helping people find alternatives to opioids to manage their pain."

Results recognizes there are cases when these medications are absolutely appropriate, but dependence on a highly addictive narcotic for long-term pain relief is not the answer. The Results approach to physical therapy not only alleviates pain in the short term, it educates the patient on how they can maintain their health and well-being for the long term. It focuses on eliminating the cause of a patient's pain, not just managing the symptoms.

"The therapists at Results are specially trained to carefully listen to what a patient is saying and feeling," explains Craig O'Neil, VP of Clinical Excellence at Results. "Further, our hands-on manual therapy approach allows a therapist to identify the primary driver of pain and immediately begin working to reduce and manage the level of pain."

"For over 20 years," continues Ueber, "the Results mission statement has started with the same sentence: At Results Physiotherapy we believe that people should not have to live with pain. That mission drives us to not only be the best, but to change how Americans experience the benefits of physical therapy. And patients do experience a difference with Results. Independent data sources confirm Results patient outcomes are in the top 10% of the PT industry nationally, and patient satisfaction routinely tops 97% (Focus On Therapeutic Outcomes, Inc.)."

Results is proud of the role physical therapy can play in the battle against addiction and living without pain. If pain is impacting how you want to live your life, please reach out to a Results clinic near you, or visit us at www.ResultsPT.com/opioids to learn more. Results Physiotherapy is ready to help. #ChoosePT.
