Utama Spice Bali Warns About The Ugly Truth Regarding Beauty Products

Utama Spice Bali, based in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, has announced that they want to warn people about the danger posed by beauty products. About 89 percent of the ingredients of personal care products have not been tested for safety. These include chemicals that are often found in soap, shampoo, makeup, perfume, skin lotions, and deodorants. Studies have shown that many of these products contain carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors. Unfortunately, the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act does not authorize the FDA to approve cosmetic ingredients.

Ria Templer, spokesperson for Utama Spice Bali, says, “The obvious question that comes to mind is why people would take the unnecessary risk of using potentially dangerous beauty products. Apparently, most people are not aware of the toxicity information regarding these products. Many don’t realize that these products are not as strictly regulated as drugs or food, and this has provided cosmetics companies a lot of leeway on the chemicals that they can include in their products. The result is that dangerous chemicals are now found in commonly used cosmetics products.”

The FDA has released the results of an expanded study confirming that lipsticks from leading cosmetics companies contain lead at much higher rates compared to what previous surveys have revealed. Another dangerous ingredient often found in personal care products are phthalates. These are often used to retain color and scent, and prevent stiffness in hair spray, nail polish, and other products. Unfortunately, the results of studies released in February 2013 have shown that these “endocrine-disrupting chemicals” are linked to asthma, allergies, obesity, cancer, and neurodevelopmental problems in newborns.

Other chemicals found in cosmetics that may adversely affect health are parabens and formaldehyde. Furthermore, some products now contain penetration enhancers, which are designed to allow the products to penetrate the protective dermis. For example, moisturizers, lotions and sunscreens may contain ceteareth-20, sulisobenzone, or micronized particles that carry the ingredients into subdermal layers. Nanoparticles have been found in animal studies to penetrate cells and tissues and ultimately reach the brain. For instance, carbon fullerenes that are currently being used in moisturizers have been found to cause brain damage in fish and that low levels of exposure has been found to be toxic to human liver cells.
