Moments, new calendar app redefines how calendars work to communicate with close friends

Moments, social calendar app focuses on the private, genuine communication among classmates, friends, and family as opposed to the existing social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok. And it's ad-free.

Netflix’s 2020 documentary The Social Dilemma sparked discussion on issues related to digital privacy by reminding us of a simple but powerful truth: “if you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product.” The film uncovered the ways that social media giants such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have leveraged world-class engineering resources to manipulate our behavior and get us addicted to their services.

Moments is reversing this trend by helping people connect in a meaningful way without compromising their personal information. The calendar-based social platform gives users a safe, easy way to share their daily lives with their loved ones and look back on their memories.
“As a private company, we’ve decided to forgo the ad-based monetization models that have let technology companies build wealth at the expense of users’ privacy. The internet should be a more comfortable place for everybody,” says Yudai Nishiyama, co-founder of Moments Technologies Inc.

Moments lets users show loved ones what they are up to without putting extensive effort into making their public feeds look good. The team prioritizes strengthening relationships over superficiality. They have avoided features such as public profiles and follower counts that have led users on other social platforms to become preoccupied with their public appearance. Users can easily share their memories or casual plans through the app’s calendar interface.

The Moments team did extensive research on consumer applications by interviewing hundreds of students throughout the United States. Their goal was simple: learn how social media has impacted students’ growth and relationships with classmates, friends, and family during the COVID-19 pandemic. They found that Gen-Z users are seeking new opportunities to communicate and express themselves to their closest friends and family members. With this in mind, the team focused on creating an app that leads to authentic communication among real friends.

“Now more than ever it’s crucial for friends and families to feel connected. Moments provides a new way to look back on your favorite memories and easily share them with the people that matter most,” says Toru Takasuka, co-founder of Moments. “Our team is working hard to build a simple, fun experience for our users and we’re excited to see how they form stronger bonds using Moments.”

The team already launched a test version of the app on the iOS App Store, and plans are underway to launch an Android version in March 2021. Over 2,000 video clips have already been shared on the platform during their customer interviews last year.

Using Moments is simple. Once installed, the app pulls all live photos and videos from your iPhone camera roll and rearranges them in a calendar view. You can add friends on the platform by phone number or by using the proximity-based adding feature -- this encourages users to connect only with people they know well. Your calendar is private and your friends see only what you choose to share.

The Playback feature allows users to quickly review clips by month or year. They also have an option to easily export clips from any day, month, or year as one video. Swiping left on the home screen brings users to their Feed, where they can swipe up and down to see their friends’ updates from the last 24 hours.

Moments Co-founders Toru Takasuka and Yudai Nishiyama both hail from Japan. Toru is an accomplished technology innovator and entrepreneur. He founded Cybozu - one of the most successful software companies in Japan’s history - and took it public in 3 years.

Yudai worked for CrowdWorks from its seed-stage to post-IPO as the 7th employee. He obtained his MBA at UCLA Anderson School of Management. In February 2020, Toru and Yudai co-founded Moments Technologies Inc.

Moments is available now on the iOS App Store.
