The update came on the heels of the unprecedented coast-to-coast storms and historic cold snap fueled by a polar vortex hitting large swathes of the U.S., delivering extreme, record-setting winter weather to much of the country, including areas that rarely see such conditions. It left millions without power, tens of millions facing subzero temperatures and multiple states under emergency declarations. Texas and at least nine other states faced monumental challenges. The aftermath of the storm resulted in approximately 70 people deaths and millions of people without access to clean water.
Apart from the devastating effects of the blackout, many homeowners are now facing skyrocketing electric bills owing to the surges in spot wholesale prices, with one price spike reaching as high as 10,000%.
