DATELINE: Kihei, Maui, March 1, 2021–FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE–

In late December 2020, a local Maui firm agreed to lease three acres of adjoining land to Maui Humane Society (“MHS”). The nonprofit’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Steve MacKinnon, signed a rental agreement with the Senior Vice President of Operations of Mahi Pono, Mr. Shan Tsutsui. The contract provides for the rental of acreage by the animal shelter for a 60-year term for the sum of only $1 annually.

The lease agreement permits the animal care facility to significantly expand its daily services. Its staff hopes to undertake this transition in the near future. The additional acreage will supply room to house more animals. It will feature an exercise area and space for the provision of veterinary services. The nonprofit’s CEO indicated the additional acreage will also allow the organization to furnish more community educational opportunities. MHS would like to construct a dog exercise park at the site, as well.

Caring For Homeless Pets on Maui

The MHS depends heavily upon public fundraising to support its activities. Every year, the shelter cares for homeless and abandoned pets. It also oversees the delivery of some veterinary services, such as spay and neuter procedures designed to reduce pet overpopulation on Maui.

The Chief Executive Officer of MHS, Steve MacKinnon, believes the completion of the rental agreement will aid the organization in conducting an expansion of its available services. He hopes the lease will ultimately result in the saving of more animal lives. His plans for the expanded facility also include expanding community education and outreach efforts.

Supporting Community Well Being

Vice President Tsutsui in late December 2020, described his firm as “honored” by the opportunity to lease the available acreage to MHS under a long-term agreement. He noted at the time that the 3-acre tract rented by the animal shelter possesses only a “limited” potential for use in agricultural production. His company welcomes the opportunity to assist MHS’s expansion efforts.

Mr. Tsutsui spoke shortly before the Christmas holiday. At that time, he also urged members of the public to consider lending their financial support to assist worthy organizations, such as the animal shelter, the Maui Food Bank, and Imua Family Services. The current MHS facility dates from 1989.

Addressing Challenges Posed by The Coronavirus Pandemic

Mr. MacKinnon noted during the joint meeting with Mr. Tsutsui in December that 2020 had presented the MHS with many challenges. Financial hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic compelled some residents of Maui to surrender their pets for adoption. Both the number of strays and the number of pets presented by owners to the shelter increased during the year.

As one component of its activities, MHS strives to place pets with volunteer foster families. The nonprofit also searches for permanent homes for the animals in its care. The nonprofit hopes to serve as a resource to assist Maui residents seeking to keep their pets in their homes. It also strives to form close ties within the local community. One important long-term goal of the organization includes conducting fundraising to support its expansion plans.
