A former drug addict who turned his life around and is now a successful entrepreneur has established a nonprofit designed to help those who have overcome adversity land a second chance. Zack Ament, 31, founder and co-CEO of Westwind Recovery, has established the Second Chance Foundation to help survivors of substance abuse, domestic violence, bullying, life-altering illness, etc. restart their lives.

“Maybe a domestic abuse survivor needs the funds to find a new, safer place to live; or a victim of bullying wants to enroll in a (safer) private school but cannot afford the tuition, or perhaps a former addict needs a computer to start their own graphic design business….if someone needs a second chance, then I’m here for them,” says Ament.

To apply for a “second chance,” briefly describe how you’ve overcome a life challenge, what your need is, and how you think it will change your life, then email it along with a recent photo of yourself and your contact info (cell number and email address) to: secondchances@zacharyament.com. All submissions will be considered and evaluated by a committee. Recipients, who must be willing to share their stories so they can inspire others, will be notified by text or email.

“I was fortunate that I was able to use my own experience to start Westwind Recovery,” Ament explains. “I hope that the Second Chance Foundation will help make other positive and lifelong dreams come true.”

Ament founded Westwind Recovery based on his own struggle with substance abuse, which he fought on and off for more than a decade. But it wasn’t his experience in rehab that inspired him to launch his own business. In fact, Westwind Recovery was borne organically…there was no business plan, no late nights filled with number crunching and “what if” scenarios.

It started with a group of friends who were all dedicated to staying sober. They rented a house together and filled their time with activities such as weekend BBQs, hiking excursions, gym workouts, dinners out on the town, weekend trips to Palm Springs — all done sober. And that’s when the idea of launching a business struck.

While most sober living facilities are relatively somber places where residents participate in mandatory group meetings, smoking breaks, card games, and watching TV, Westwind Recovery broke the mold by incorporating “fun” in sobriety. These shared experiences helped residents forge closed bonds with one another and the friendships that ensued helped keep each other sober. Today, Westwind maintains 7 sober living houses, a detox center, an inpatient rehab, and an outpatient center in LA and West Hollywood. For more information, visit www.westwindrecovery.com.
