Margies Big Day Out’s top 7 weekend things.

The scenery of Margaret River varies from the staggeringly impressive coastline to captivating limestone cave networks that seep into the rolling green vineyards and wineries that stretch over the valleys.

The area brims with culinary delights and delectable wine tasting experiences at wineries that offer more than just a pretty view. The region’s wine producers are responsible for some of Australia’s most popular wines served alongside an array of local fresh produce. It’s a glorious experience that is but only the start of things to do over a weekend.

“Take all of these culinary experiences and combine it with great surfing, plenty of wildlife, and a charming local shopping scene. This is the reason why Margaret River and its surroundings are quickly becoming considered one of Australia’s best weekend and holiday destinations on the rise,” says Margies Big Day Out owner Russell Hogan, who’s been trailblazing beer and wine tasting tours in the region for over 10 years.

Russell’s list of top weekend things to do is something that takes visitors off a beaten path into the places that creates lasting memories.

Boranup Karri Forest: Boranup Karri Forest is nestled between Caves Road and the coastline. It is a magical place filled with pale-barked karri trees that are one of the tallest species of tree in the world, reaching nearly 90 meters in height.

Mark this up as an excursion that costs nothing. There’s a parking lot available for those who want to explore more of this forest on foot.

Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse: This is easily one of the most scenic spots to start off an evening. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse offers spectacular views of the coastline where the Indian and South Oceans meet. Advanced bookings for fully guided tours of the lighthouse are required and tickets cost approximately AUD $20. It’s totally worth the price, though. It includes fascinating facts about the history of the lighthouse – the build, the keepers, the multiple shipwrecks prior to building the lighthouse and how operations are maintained.

Margaret River Wine & Beer Route: This is where the fun and games start. Leave the car behind and hop on one of Margies Big Day Out Beer & Wine Tours for a day of tasting and frolicking in the sun. Margies Big Day Out takes their guests to some of the world’s most innovative, award-winning wine and beer makers who are waiting to greet them amongst beautifully manicured settings across the Margaret River wine region.

It’s a wine lovers delight to smell, swirl and taste the day away at boutique wineries with family and friends. Wine connoisseurs can leave with bottles of their favourite drop that are only available for purchase at the cellar door.

Beer lovers will quench their thirst and send their taste buds into meltdown, sipping all the frothy flavours from local breweries around the region on tour.

Injidup Natural Spa: This natural rock pool is located in Yallingup and is a hidden gem in the Margaret River region. This is the best opportunity to spend the afternoon in the water. Just be sure to bring sunscreen and appropriate footwear. “Follow the trail on the left-hand side of the parking lot, all the way down towards the coast. This one is a stunner and quite the Instagram moment at that,” says Russell.

Meelup Beach: Meelup Beach is popular and it’s easy to see why. Fine white sand, crystal clear water, no wind or waves…This is definitely the best spot to cool down in the summer heat. It’s also the perfect beach for those who travel with kids.

Lake Cave: Margaret River is home to more than 100 natural caves, some as deep as a 12-storey building. There are 4 show caves in the Margaret River region that are currently open to the public, where visitors may join semi-guided tours to explore deep underground.

The Lake Cave near Boranup Forest is spectacular and is suitable for most visitors (children under 4 visit for free) but requires a walk of approximately 300 steps down and back up. The stalactites, stalagmites and straws in the cave are incredible and there is also a rare suspended table formation – thought to be the only of its kind in the world.

The Aquarium: “The Aquarium is very much like the natural spa at Injidup. This natural rock pool is largely protected from waves and swell, but the best part is the warm, turquoise water. It’s a vision,” shares Russell.

The Margaret River region also has one of the longest whale watching seasons in the world: the season runs during the 2nd half of the year and whales are often spotted during their migration. Other than that, one really doesn’t need more reason to add this beautiful destination to that weekend getaway list.
