The human body is a network of interconnected systems and organs. Unfortunately, issues that impact one particular area of the body can also affect the health and function of other areas. Recently, studies have highlighted evidence for links between gum disease and heart disease. Since heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, this deserves serious consideration.

A 2021 Harvard Health article titled “Gum Disease and Heart Disease: The Common Thread” says, “People with gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) have two to three times the risk of having a heart attack, stroke, or other serious cardiovascular event. But there may not be a direct connection.”

The article goes on to say, “Many people with heart disease have healthy gums, and not everyone with gum disease develops heart problems. Shared risk factors, such as smoking or an unhealthy diet, may explain the association. Still there’s a growing suspicion that gum disease may be an independent risk factor for heart disease.”

As the article points out, diet and smoking’s effect on the mouth and teeth may have an association with heart disease. Foods that are high in starches and sugars, including carbonated soft drinks, can damage teeth and cause tooth decay.

Also, whether smoking or using vaping liquid that contains it, nicotine has a detrimental effect on the cardiovascular system and can damage teeth, gums, and lungs. Studies have also connected vaping to a rapid loss in healthy cells that line the top layer of the mouth.

However, as with many other diseases, preventing gum disease alone will not completely remove the risk of developing heart disease. But, a commitment to a regular oral health regiment can help keep the entire body healthy.
