Jackson Hall, Palo Alto-based Baseball Coach, on the Value of Sports to Children

PALO ALTO, CA / ACCESSWIRE / September 9, 2021 / For many, sports may seem like a game or a fun way to spend an afternoon. There are, however, also many important things that children can learn from playing sports that can help them succeed later in life in their careers and relationships. Long-time little league baseball coach from Palo Alto Jackson Hall gives his perspective on why it's important for children to play sports and the important lessons it can teach them.

Friendships

One of the best things that children can gain when they start a sport is new friends. Sports allow kids to open up their social circles beyond their families and school friends. For team sports especially, there is a special bond that can be built between teammates, and kids learn at an early age what it means to share success and failure with other people.

For Palo Alto coach Jackson Hall, one of the first things he notices when kids join his baseball teams are the friendships that are formed. "I've seen lifelong friendships form right in front of my eyes. It doesn't matter when they join the team either. There's something special about sports, but when you have the kids all rooting for each other and the same goals during a game, they form a close bond," says Hall about the kids he coaches.

Discipline

Another vital lesson that kids learn through sports is discipline. Getting better at any activity requires dedication, perseverance, and patience, and joining a sport is an excellent way to begin teaching those skills. Being able to continue practicing a sport even if you don't feel like it is an important lesson in commitment that can last children their whole lives. The lesson learned through persistence and discipline is that hard work pays off, and good results take practice and time.

Coach Jackson Hall says, "For a lot of the kids I coach, baseball is their extracurricular activity outside of school. It can be a learning curve sometimes for them to understand that they're not going to be playing like professionals after one week of training. But, once they start putting in the work and seeing the progress they're making, it gets easier."

Learning to Lose

In addition to forming friendships and learning discipline, sports can teach children how to lose graciously. In life things often don't go the way we hope, however it is our reactions to these hurdles that show character. Participating in sports can be a lower-stakes way for children to learn how to react to losing in a way that will set them up for success later in life.

"The first game they lose is always the hardest. I think when the kids start playing the game they expect that they'll win every time. I think losing builds character though. I have to remember to tell them that just because they lost this time, doesn't mean that the practice and hard work they put in wasn't worth it. I just tell them ‘stay humble, practice hard, and we'll win next time'," explains Jackson Hall.

Playing sports can teach children many valuable lessons. As baseball coach from Palo Alto Jackson Hall explains, three of the most valuable things to be gained from sports are friendships, discipline, and learning to lose. While it may take time for children to develop these skills, once learned, they can be very useful later in life. Of course, beyond teaching values and skills, Hall says that the most important lesson in sports is to have fun and enjoy the game.
