Studio Khora Introduces Split House As A Design Concept For Multi-Million Dollar Houses In Florida

The challenge of this design is to provide a solution to a repetitive problem of deep and narrow lots in South Florida, which limits the possibility of having all rooms facing more beautiful views. In addition, the secondary rooms typically face the neighbors to the left and right side, thus creating a lack of natural light deep within the building.

Fort Lauderdale architects’ Studio Khora proposed a simple shaped contemporary house that is “split” into two building masses, moved away from each other, enhanced with extraordinary landscaping to deliver beauty and natural light into the home.

With a modest 12-foot Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired ceiling height, the foyer emphasizes the Split House concept and contrasts with the double-height ceiling elsewhere. In addition, the house was slitted to insert landscaping, where a willow tree and water feature provide a dramatic display.

The first room as you enter this contemporary house is the Great Room, in which the split design concept complements the adjacent rooms with their exquisite views of the golf course.

The natural grace of a willow tree is an integral element of the overall architectural design, without boundaries between architecture and interiors.

The use of plants and open views of nature extends to the interior design with a green marble accent in the master bedroom. The C-channel-shaped roof embraces the willow tree and repeats as a design concept for the staircase and throughout the house.

The heat pump, pool equipment, and electrical meter have been located beyond the landscape so that the occupants may contemplate the willow tree and water feature without the distractions of mechanical and electrical equipment.
