Skin tightening treatments have evolved considerably in recent years, with less invasive options becoming more widely available. One such option is Renuvion, often used in procedures such as a “scarless tummy tuck.

Renuvion works by using plasma energy to contract the skin, improving elasticity and creating a smoother, more toned appearance. While Renuvion treatment can be highly effective under the right circumstances, the procedure is not for everyone and some patients will require more invasive treatment to see results.

If you are wondering if the procedure is right for you, below we will provide you with a brief overview of how Renuvion works.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Renuvion?

While Renuvion is frequently associated with scarless tummy tucks, it can be used to treat loose skin anywhere on the body including, but not limited to:

  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Arms
  • Breasts
  • Knees
  • Lower neck and face

Renuvion can address skin elasticity issues that result from weight loss, pregnancy, or the natural effects of aging. Sometimes, it is done in conjunction with liposuction to further augment volume reduction by tightening underlying tissues.

Candidates for Renuvion usually have milder elasticity issues. In some cases (which we will talk more about below) more invasive treatment options may be recommended over it. A consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon can help you determine if Renuvion would work for you given your aesthetic goals.

You also need to be at a healthy weight and in good overall health prior to undergoing any cosmetic surgery, including Renuvion. You may be asked to make lifestyle changes, like quitting smoking, prior to undergoing treatment.

What Happens During The Procedure?

Your surgeon will create a small incision – usually less than a centimeter – on your skin and then insert a small Renuvion hand-piece. The device releases helium gas and radiofrequency energy, both of which combine to create plasma energy. This energy simultaneously heats and cools the underlying tissue, a combination that contracts collagen, which improves skin elasticity and laxity over time. This also makes Renuvion highly effective as well as exceptionally safe.

The procedure usually takes around 15-30 minutes to complete per area, but times vary depending on the size of the treatment area. It is not painful, but some patients experience mild discomfort. If you are concerned about pain, talk to your surgeon about pain management.

Another benefit of Renuvion is – as opposed to other skin tightening treatments – most patients only need a single treatment to see results. While you will see some small changes right away with Renuvion, your skin will continue to improve for six to nine months following the procedure.

How Long Is Recovery?

Recovery from Renuvion is mild, especially in comparison to other skin tightening treatments such as a tummy tuck. Most patients experience mild swelling and pain for the first weeks after treatment and have to wear a compression garment for four to six weeks.

However, in most cases, you can resume most normal day-to-day activities within a few days. Always talk to your surgeon about specific aftercare instructions and for a breakdown of your recovery timeline.

Full recovery takes three months or less on average.

Are There Side Effects?

Renuvion is a very low risk procedure overall, but some patients experience mild pain for a few days after treatment. This can usually be managed with over-the-counter treatments like Ibuprofen and ice packs.

In rare cases, more serious complications can occur such as skin sensitivity, scarring, and discoloration. These can usually be corrected with follow-up treatment.

Are There Limitations To Renuvion?

For mild skin laxity and elasticity issues, Renuvion can be an excellent alternative to more invasive options. Those with more substantial skin sagging, however, may need to undergo more advanced treatments.

In cases of skin sagging due to extreme weight loss, Renuvion is usually not recommended. Your surgeon will likely recommend more invasive procedures, such as a tummy tuck or body lift.

Many patients also worry about whether or not Renuvion is permanent. On average, results last between three and five years. Aging will eventually cause your skin to sag, but you can undergo Renuvion or a similar procedure to address this in the future.

As is the case for other treatments – like a tummy tuck or liposuction – changes to your body can affect your results. Weight gain or pregnancy, for example, can stretch out the skin.

The Bottom Line

If you have minor skin sagging issues, Renuvion can be a minimally invasive, pain-free treatment option that comes with minimal recovery time. While it is not adequate for every patient, in many cases it can leave your skin looking smoother and firmer, improving your self-esteem in the process.
