Whitman Partners Diversity Hiring Report

Shows Challenges and Opportunities Ahead in Healthcare for Inclusion in the OR

PORTLAND, OR, October 13, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Whitman Partners, a search firm dedicated to recruiting Directors of Surgical Services in interim and permanent roles, has released a report, Diversity Hiring in Healthcare 2021.

The report was produced in preparation for a panel conversation, "The Inclusive OR: Roles and Goals for Creating a Diverse Team," presented by Whitman Partners at the OR Manager Business Management Conference in San Diego.

In 2020, Whitman Partners added "BIPOC Perioperative Leaders to Know" to their queue of Awards and Recognition Programs. The goal is to highlight leaders from diverse backgrounds, giving voice to distinct viewpoints and experiences.

Through those conversations, it has been made clear that there is a critical need to create and maintain an inclusive workplace in the operating room. The report, conducted by Riley Research Associates, provides data to support what many BIPOC leaders have experienced.

The report surveyed 100 healthcare professionals across the United States involved in the recruitment, hiring, and training of individuals in perioperative positions. Respondents were employed at hospitals, surgery centers, physician-owned medical centers, and adult care facilities. Topics included skill development, the role of mentoring, training, and the lack of BIPOC professionals in C-level positions.

For 71% of respondents, leadership commitment was deemed the most crucial factor for creating a diverse and inclusive organization. For organizations with 700+ employees, leadership was valued even more at 85%.

Additional challenges are the lack of qualified BIPOC candidates for C-level and director positions for close to half (47%) of the respondents and the need to create a higher level of awareness among BIPOC healthcare professionals of career advancement opportunities in perioperative medicine.
