With more and more of us choosing to take our family holidays in the UK, British coastal towns are finally getting the love and attention they deserve. And with so many great options for us to choose from, it’s easy to see why they have become so popular. Britain has a beautiful and varied coastline that provides everything from action-packed family holidays, romantic getaways, picturesque walking holidays and luxury retreats.  So if you’re looking for some ideas for beach holidays in the UK, check out the below for some inspiration.

Looking for a coastal holiday a little off the beaten track? Tynemouth is an ancient seaside town steeped in history, nestled in the northeast close to Newcastle. With a vibrant nightlife, a great shopping centre, and interesting historical attractions, the town has more to offer than just beautiful golden beaches.

The dramatic Tynemouth Priory & Castle, which dates back centuries, dominates the headland and is the burial place of Saints and Kings of the old Kingdom of Northumbria.

The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade was the first of its kind in the world and its unique story is told in a small museum. A monument to Lord Collingwood looking across the river is in honour of the local-born Admiral who took over from Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.

There are also breathtaking walks to enjoy around Tynemouth – a stroll along the seafront is rewarded with views of golden sandy beaches, whilst the promenade takes you to the historic North Shields Fish Quay.

Beautiful beaches, towering cliffs, idyllic towns and some of the best surf in the country – Cornwall has long been one of Britain’s top coastal holiday destinations.

Some unmissable beach highlights are Sennen (Whitsand Bay) just a short walk over the cliffs from Land’s End, Godrevy Beach between Hayle and Godrevy Head, Praa Sands Beach between Perranuthnoe and Porthleven and Perranporth (Penhale Sands) – all of which offer gorgeous views and different activity options.

With plenty of family campsites, hotels and even luxury lodges with hot tubs to choose from, you’ll be spoiled for choice in terms of accommodation. Some top days out include the Eden Project, Minack Theatre, Trebah Garden, King Arthur’s Great Halls and Helston Railway.

Easy to reach from all over the North West (close to both Liverpool and Manchester), and surrounded by natural beauty and expansive coastlines, Southport is and makes for a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of big city living.

There’s plenty to do and see in the area. Starting your journey along the coast, at Crosby Beach you can experience the famous Anthony Gormley ‘Another Place’ art installation.

Heading to Formby beach, you can climb through the natural sand dunes until you come to the most panoramic view of the coast. Ainsdale Beach is a haven of things to do from kitesurfing, para carting and other beach attractions and activities.

While in Southport, leave the town behind and head to Southport beach, build sandcastles or enjoy the pier and coastal views.
