ST. PAUL, Minn. – Author Dr. Artika Tyner released her newest children’s book, “Akua is Great,” at an event held at Saint Peter Claver (SPC) School in the historic Rondo community. She dedicated the book to SPC and stopped in to read to the school’s kindergarten students. Staff and students were excited to have Tyner visit.

The book is available now on Amazon and at the Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute’s (PPGJLI) bookstore. “Akua is Great” is the story of a young Black girl’s journey as she learns about her heritage and identity via bedtime stories told by her mother. Her mother follows the stories up with a list of affirmations and an inspiring role model that has made a difference in the world.

Each affirmation reminds Akua of her greatness. Written by Tyner and illustrated by Bilal Karaca, “Akua is Great” effectively reminds every child that they are great. The 25-page paperback is a source of inspiration, encouragement and pride. The book celebrates cultural diversity and teaches the practice of self-affirmation.

Tyner wrote the book to inspire youth to discover the greatness within them and provide a positive reflection through the dynamic women leaders featured in the book. The author introduces readers to a variety of exemplary African women leaders. Knowing about their heritage, culture and origins can inspire empathy and compassion in children.

Children that know their roots have higher self-esteem, feel more in charge of their destiny, are more resilient, and enjoy better emotional health according to studies at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Knowing their origins is important for children to establish their core identity and create a sense of belonging.

Affirmation is especially important for children, particularly in an age of social media. “Akua is Great” provides a creative learning experience that’s also fun. Tyner’s new book stands as a shining example of the power of positivity.
