Special guests and fun surprises, too. In the late 1970's, Andy Kaufman starred in the TV show ": Taxi" and came to Memphis in 1982 to wrestle the King... Andy got a pile driver from the King, injuring Andy's neck. This event marks four decades since Kaufman and Lawler soon after appeared on the David Letterman show on which Lawler slapped Kaufman, who was in a neck brace at the time, on national television --which was heard 'round the world! Join us for everything Andy!

Free event.
First come, first served, until capacity.

(MEMPHIS, TN.) WWE Hall of Famer Jerry "The King" Lawler will be appearing in person at his BBQ restaurant, King Jerry Lawler's Hall of Fame Bar & Grille on Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, on Thursday, June 23, 2022, at 8:00 pm on a very special event.

The King may finally get a chance to heal old wounds and make peace with the late comedian Andy Kaufman (1949-1984), after a much-publicized feud in 1982, which made history in professional wrestling. He may even get an apology from Andy in absentia, from beyond the grave.

June 23rd will mark the 40th anniversary of Lawler and Kaufman (who starred in the hit TV series "Taxi" and movies). Kaufman came to Memphis from Hollywood to face off against the King at major professional wrestling events in the mid-South territory back in 1982.

Lawler said that Andy Kaufman once told him that he "would give up everything he was doing in Hollywood if he could be involved in professional wrestling." Kaufman did just that.

The feud culminated in a historic appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, where Lawler slapped Kaufman's face live on the air on national television. It was a precursor and blueprint to the Will Smith-Chris Rock at the Academy Awards that happened earlier this year. Lawler and Kaufman did it first. Kaufman's untimely death in 1984 from lung cancer means that the feud was never formally resolved.

That is the reason that Lawler is set to receive a Proclamation from the village of Great Neck, NY, Kaufman's birthplace in Long Island, NY.

Presenting the Proclamation to Lawler and his restaurant will be independent filmmaker, Kevin Sean Michaels, who directed the Andy Kaufman-themed documentary film, Kaufmania, which recently won Best Documentary at Palm Springs Comedy Festival. Michaels himself is a resident of Long Island, NY. Lawler himself appears in the movie, with many other luminaries from Kaufman's own past, including Tony Clifton, Fred Willard, and "Little Wendy" Polland.

There will be an autograph signing afterward. Lawler and Michaels will sign DVD copies which will be for sale immediately after the event, and the restaurant will also serve Kaufman's favorite delicacy, milk, and cookies to fans.

The plaque presented to the restaurant will be "a formal apology from Kaufman to the South," according to MIchaels. "After everything Andy said in his short professional wrestling career, the people of Memphis are owed that much."

"Andy Kaufman coming along was the greatest thing that ever happened to my career," King Lawler said.

King Jerry Lawler's Hall of Fame Bar & Grille is located at 159 Beale St. in Memphis. The event is free admission, advance reservations are encouraged
