Kensington(R) Picks DisplayLink for Adapter That Connects DVI/VGA Displays Over USB

DisplayLink today announced its network display technology was selected as the basis of the new Kensington Dual Monitor Adapter, a cost-effective USB graphics adapter (UGA) that makes it easy to expand a computers visual workspace by adding multiple VGA or DVI displays to a PC using USB 2.0.

Kensington Dual Monitor Adapter users can expand their desktop by pairing up to 6 displays connected to a single USB port to create a powerful desktop command center that provides immersive access to digital multimedia content at work or home. The high-performance adapter is compatible with Windows XP and Vista. Using DisplayLinks latest graphics transport software, 3D images, such as the Windows Vista Aero interface or Google Earth, as well as smooth DVD video playback are rendered in 32-bit color depth.

The adapter is unique in that it has both VGA and DVI connectors and can be used interchangeably with either type of display. This makes it ideal for traveling users who need to connect to a wide range of displays, or for organizations that want connectivity flexibility.

Kensington debuted the adapter today at the 2008 International CES in Las Vegas. The adapter includes DVI-I and VGA video output; mirrored desktop, extended desktop and primary display (with Vista) video modes; and supports widescreen displays up to 1440 x 1050 pixels and standard displays up to 1280 x 1024 pixels.

User interest for multi-monitor, multi-tasking computing solutions is great, and that demand will take off now that there is an adapter solution that is both easy to use and has ubiquitous connectivity, said Frederic Frappereau, Global Product Marketing Manager at Kensington. Now people can double their visual workspace to screen emails, chat, and work on multiple documents without flipping or tabbing through a multitude of open windows.

Kensingtons proven consumer product expertise combined with our plug-and-play USB network display technology makes it possible for ordinary users to easily add, and mix and match, displays to create their ideal digital media viewing environment, said Hamid Farzaneh, DisplayLink president and CEO.

DisplayLink technology is comprised of high-performance Hardware Rendering Engine (HRE) network display chips and Virtual Graphics Card (VGC) software that power high-quality, fully interactive 32-bit true-color graphics with real-time video playback across a USB link. They are designed for monitor manufacturers, PC OEMs and PC accessory companies who want to develop easy-to-use, high performance products such as USB-connected monitors, video-capable USB laptop docking stations, Skype video phones, picture frames and other devices. The companys adaptive compression algorithm and graphics protocol can also transmit graphics over other standard network interfaces, including wireless USB, Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

Availability & Pricing

The Kensington Dual Monitor Adapter will be available in early Q2 with an estimated street price of $99.
