Four new spirits are from the 238-year-old Kimerud Distillery, which produces the highest-awarded Norwegian gin. The hand-crafted spirits are produced in a small craft operation on a family farm in the Lier district west of Oslo. It makes a wide range of gins plus its Havaldsen Triple Cask Aquavit, which ISC is also introducing to the Canadian market.
The Havaldsen Triple Cask 40% Aquavit is Norway's first triple-cask aquavit from potato spirits. It has been stored for at least nine months in three different barrels: sherry, Madeira, and French oak. This aquavit won a silver medal at the International Spirit Competition in 2017 and the Vinmonopolet blind taste competition in 2018.
Independent Spirits Canada has also launched The Kimerud Hillside Aged Gin 42%, a double cask gin, which has been stored in oak, old sherry, and French oak barrels for up to six months. The barrels have also held Havaldsen Aquavit, so this gin gains both the gin and aquavit flavour, some sweetness from the sherry, and a delicate brown sugar and vanilla taste from the oak barrels.
"This provides a very complex and elegant gin that can be used both as a digestif or in different cocktails, including gin tonics," said one company spokesperson. "This gin can also be served with ginger beer and ice."
The Kimerud Gin 40% is a highly awarded gin that has been distilled five times. It is a smooth, complex gin that works well for gin tonics. It received a double gold medal at the China Wine & Spirits Awards (CWSA).
The Kimerud Wild Grade Gin 47% is the Kimerud family's most potent dry gin. Distilled five times, it can be used for dry martinis and gin tonics. This gin also received a gold medal in San Franciscos's World Spirit Competition 2017 and a Silver Outstanding award at IWSC 2017.
